mot failure

Post  shand on Tue Apr 05, 2011 4:18 pm

Evening all

Vega failed its mot on a knocking on the front suspension ( lower fork buffers ) and excess travel on the brake pedal, the brake worked fine by the way. the tester said the the full travel of the pedal should be two thirds of the pedal length, meaning in my case the pedal should stop 16mm before the pedal touches the floorboard. I've fitted new cable new brake shoes and a vespa front brake adjuster kit from beedspeed to make it easy to adjust, when I adjust the brake to give this 16 mm stop the brake is well and truly on. Should I just find amore sympathetic mot tester or am I missing something really stupid

it might help to move the rear brake arm back a couple of splines.
when not using j range adjusters i have always pushed the lever arm so its just on, the jammed it to stop it moving or got the wife to hold it, then pulled all the slack cable through and tighten up the clamp.
its not a ideal job for one person to do on your own, using the j range rear brake arm and cable adjuster makes the job easier and adjustment simple.

Thanks for the reply Daz, I tried moving the brake arm on the splines but this does not take up the eccessive travel. I fitted one of these http://beedspeed.com/product_info.php?cPath=76_113&products_id=1508 so I should be able to give it a final adjustment before it gets tested so hopefully this will do the trick

nice little item that, make sure it does not foul on the casing when the brake is applied.

Works perfectly, had to open the holes in the cable clamp, run a 3mm drill down the middle and changed the pin and split pin for a 5mm bolt and nyloc nut bargain for £2.25 and it passed its mot

Shand, any chance of posting a few pics of your adjuster set up. I've been looking for a alternative to the vega item and can't get a j range brake arm for love nor money

Here you go, would look better if it was silver or zinced but it works and easy to adjust

thackers, scooter restorations still show that they have the j range brake arm and adjuster in stock.
if using the "new type" brake arm will be better suited to the beedspeed adjuster.
