125 4 speed Lui . . .

Post  zefarelly on Wed Aug 11, 2010 8:47 am

125 sterstream guts

most of a vega's guts

a Lui 50 engine

plan is a std-ish) 125 top end to use as a paddock scooter, I've built the gearbox and installed the clutch . . ported the barrel top end is ready with a modified/bodged/repaired vega exhaust, and inlet/carb. just waiting for oil seals to finish crank installation.

Q: is the Lui casing different to a vega? I haven't seen one for so long, I think the offset of the sprockets means I'll have to make spacers for the chain guides? I camn't remember now its been 15 or more years since I last touched one, but the bottom guide goes on first, top second, facing inwards?

thanks
Joe

thanks, next question, is it just in the middle, or is it likely to snap in half if I give it too much beans!!! I noticed the mag flange bolts are only M5, so exhaust mounting looks frail, but shouldn't be a problem to sort out, everything else has gone together ok . . . .

I havce an FiA (original period spec) 1963 MK2 Cortina GT, so race with CTCRC, U2TC, Goodwood once before and odd others here and there . . . . can't really afford to do it competitively anymore, very much a rich mans game now Sad

The layshaft and crankcase areas are different. You cant fit a four speed gearbox in a lui as afar as I know.

There's no difference in so far as strength though.

Got my oil seals this morning and just found all this out . . . . 4 speed box seems to assemble ok, but the J125 ( and Vega I assume) crank webs are 4mm wider.

Mag flange is the same, so the drive side main bearing housing needs to be machined 4mm further in ( which will put the bearing into the chain case I think . . . . I suppose if I'm completely nuts I could mill it out and make a bolt on bearing housing . . .or get it Tig Welded . . . )

Anyone got a Vega engine casing ? !!! Embarassed

I have a vega engine casing, although you would need the side casing as well. Also it has a couple of small faults - a small crack in the engine casing near the drive side bearing. Also the outside is fairly pitted. ALternatively you could source j125 crank and gearbox which will fit in a lui casing.

Wow! That was quick!! I will soon have a bare J125 casing.. but I guess that kinda defeats the purpose Cool

I'd be interested in the Vega casing.

I've got a Lui complete and original . . . and another Lui in bits, mint case and gearbox.

In my aulds stash of bits I found a vega gearbox and end plate, and a few primary drive/clutch bits, no front sprocket, a flywheel and stator. I recently bought a J125 guts complete, a vega side casing and a few other bits. The plan is to build a 125 motor for the bike in bits to use as a paddock scooter and a std vega engine for the Lui to keep it looking as original as possible.

would be good to keep the Lui engine original and spare, although the temptation to tune it up for a bit of a laugh may prove too great!

I think thats the plan, today at least

I need a vega crank and 0.75/1mm OS piston, and then, should have a spare J125 crank and a few other bits . . . .

Just to confirm, was it the four speed starstream engine bits that you bought or the three speed J125?

If its the 3 speed you can just transfer that en mass in to one of your lui cases

As far as the Vega engine case goes I'll have root through my stuff and try to find it and send you some pictures. Might take a little time so hopefully your not in too much of a rush.

I bought 4 speed starstream stuff.

lesson learnt, I have a complete Vega gearse except the front sprocket . . . and a starstream crank with front drive sprocket/cush assembly

I'm trying to remember what was in my old vega when it went, must have been a starstream gearbox with vega front sprocket!

I was hoping to have it built last week . . . . I'll have to get the TV S2 out! seriously I wante it built for Spa in Late September . . . the Lui won't get up Eu Rouge!

THanks to snails offer f a Vega cae I have now built my engine, 125 startstream, slight tickle on the barrel, thinner head gasket but otherwise bog standard. All went together very easily, just need to make a head cowling that fits and fit it in.

You can use the j125 one if you have it. Just need to knock a dent in it to stop the frame hitting it when the suspension bottoms out.

I only had a Lui 50 one . . .so I've got slightly medieval with tin snips, a mig welder and whats left of an old microwave cover so it looks like electric rat shit applied to sheet metal, beautifully crafted with a ball pein hammer . . . . but it fits and should work!

If I can sneak down the workshop this morning I'll try and get it installed.

job done, tweaked the timing and it runs like a dream . . . tootled round town for 20 minutes, checked it all over, adjusted cables, got all 4 gears, fitted a PTFE coated throttle cable, still stiff, as are gears, but wound it up just now and with no speedo I can't tell but its quick enough . . .and it didn't come close to pinking or seizing . . .didn't even need to flick the choke on!

Its been a while, but I fired the Lui up on Sat, and remembered somene asked about the exhaust . . . . here's a pic I found on my phone just before I installed the engine, it was peppered with small holes on the back so I cut the rot out, removed a baffle and plated it up, its a little noisy but not too bad, certainly works well enough

oh, I made a new gauge as the speedo blanking plate blew off and I lost it
